My credential is due for renewal but I want to apply for a higher credential. Do I still need to renew my current credential?

To prevent your current credential from expiring, you must either apply for the next credential or renew your existing one prior to the due date.

If you do not submit your application for the higher credential before the due date, a grace period of 60 days will be granted. After this grace period, your existing credential will become ineligible for use.

If you decide to allow your current credential to expire and concentrate on applying for the higher credential, that's perfectly acceptable.

The ICF Credential Upgrade Policy aids coaches who seek a higher-level credential within one year of (before or after) their current expiration date by extending their active certification status for up to 12 months beyond the original expiration date. This new guideline permits credential-holders to retain their existing credential while their new application is under review and processing, eliminating the need for a separate credential renewal application and associated fees.
